Papers and photographs, 1917-1984, (bulk 1917-1919).

Papers and photographs of Alvin F. Koser, a private in Company C, 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Mexican Border War and a 2nd lieutenant with the 305th Infantry Regiment during World War I. Materials include three separate journals kept by Koser during his military service. The first contains entries written during his service in the Mexican Border War, from call-up through return to Wisconsin. His daily observations are brief and include statements about the weather, inspections, and guard duty. The second journal is very brief and described a few days of training in August 1917 in preparation for World War I. The final journal is similarly brief but covered a greater span, from October 1918 through January 1919. Entries described Koser's role in the battle of the Argonne, his exposure to mustard gas, and his subsequent medical treatment. Also included in this collection are booklets and menus from Koser's voyage back the United States aboard the Aquitania in 1919, Koser's military papers including enlistment and discharge forms, and ephemeral items from France such as transportation tickets, maps, and menus. Items in the oversized folder are a large promotion certificate, a roster of Company C, 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, and a small World War I poster. Photographs include shots of Koser in uniform, shots from his time with the 1st Wisconsin Regiment, and unidentified pictures of him with other soldiers and civilian women.
